Greene’s main buildings are situated in the centre of Oxford and, although it is a small college, it has, for over 50 years, a history of providing a very high level of tutorial service in its sixth form and providing excellent results for those students wishing to enter university.

Line manager: Executive Director

 

Position description:

 

The Deputy College Principal will be accountable for the academic progress and pastoral welfare of the sixth form students and the cultivation of esprit de corps within the community of tutors with a common commitment to academic excellence. A successful learning culture will enable students to become enthusiastic and independent learners.

 

Working in a small team, the Deputy College Principal will demonstrate a proactive, ‘can do’ approach and fit well into a fast moving and demanding environment with an international dimension. As Greene’s develops, there will be changes in  the emphasis of duties. The Deputy College Principal will display a flexible attitude towards tasks and working hours and adapt to meet the shifting dynamics of the workplace.

 

Primary duties and responsibilities

  • Ensuring that policies, practices and ethos are promoted consistently
  • Promoting the importance of independent learning
  • Planning and delivering the Greene’s Personal Development Programme (PDP)
  • Leading tutors for the purpose of monitoring performance and achieving the overall objectives of the curriculum
  • Assisting with admissions for new students

 

Overseeing student academic progress & experience

  • Overseeing an effective means of initial student assessment
  • Running the initial induction programme of all students
  • Monitoring student achievement through detailed analysis of data and through trial examinations, reports, tutorial observations and sampling work, seeking means of effective intervention where progress is not as expected
  • Meeting weekly with the academic department reviewing all student’s performance and acting upon feedback
  • Meeting weekly with the Executive Director to provide formal feedback on progress
  • Maintaining effective and appropriate contact with parents

 

Overseeing student behaviour and pastoral wellbeing

  • Acting as lead nominated safeguarding contact
  • Taking a lead where disciplinary intervention is required

 

University admissions & Careers

  • Overseeing university admission applications

 

Strategic Leadership & Development

  • Monitoring and evaluating the quality of tutoring and learning through tutors’ planning, work sampling, student feedback, tutorial observations, further training, and reporting outcomes, and planning future actions
  • Supporting new tutors
  • Arranging a programme of ‘cross departmental’ tutorial observations
  • Fostering a learning culture that is innovative and responsive to student needs
  • Leading the college’s preparation for inspections

 

Indicators of performance

Measures of individual performance include:

  1. Ensuring every sixth form student takes on a leadership role
  2. Ensuring service delivery and student feedback is 90% more than satisfactory
  3. Observing 5% of delivered tutorials
  4. Analysing and reporting student data on a weekly basis
  5. Submitting all reports and UCAS (or similar) applications to deadline
  6. Submitting a monthly report on the quality of tutor performance

The job also requires collaborative working with and support to work colleagues as detailed above and otherwise. Overall considerations of performance will take this into account.

  • Excellent I.T. skills, including proficiency with office software programs, including spreadsheets, databases and word processing
  • A sense of fairness and honesty that takes priority over commercial considerations

The post is subject to a satisfactory result from the enhanced disclosure application to the Disclosure and Barring Service.

 

Remuneration: 35.000€ per year

 

Holidays: There is an entitlement of 22 days holiday per year plus bank holidays, with two weeks to be taken at Christmas/New Year; and the balance to be taken during July and the first half of August. Holidays – other than short breaks – cannot be taken between 1st September and the Christmas break; between mid-January and the end of June. Holidays must be submitted to the line manager for approval four weeks in advance of the desired holiday date.

 

Hours: Office hours are generally 8.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Mondays to Fridays with an unpaid lunch break of one hour, however some flexibility may be required during busy times.
