Geoscience Diploma
The Greene’s Physical Geography and Environmental Science Diploma (PGESD) offers you direct access to excellent universities across the U.K.
What can I do with the PGESD?
Every aspect of modern life is associated with Environmental Science. From building materials for our houses to fuel for our cars. The PGESD provides a highly effective foundation for further studies in Environmental Science, Geology, Palaeontology, and related degree subjects at U.K. universities. Such degrees lead to a wide range of careers:
- Prospecting for oil or minerals worldwide
- Analysing geological data for government geological surveys
- Civil engineering and construction
- Urban and rural planning
- Energy management, and surveying
GUARANTEED UNIVERSITY PROGRESSION
Successful completion of the Diploma award enables guaranteed progression onto a range of undergraduate degree courses at the Universities of Birmingham and Portsmouth, the availability of which depend on your final score.
University of Birmingham:
- BSc (Hons) Geology
- BSc (Hons) Geology and Physical Geography
- BSc (Hons) Palaeobiology and Palaeoenvironments
- MSci Palaeobiology and Palaeoenvironments
- MSci Palaeobiology and Palaeoenvironments with an International Year
COURSE OUTLINE
Employing the university tutorial method, teaching takes the form of a combination of online and face-to-face individual and small group tutorials, seminars and workshops. In addition, to enable you to observe geological phenomena at first hand and to collect data for analysis and interpretation, the course includes both practical sessions and field trips. There are two routes for progression to the full PGESD:
- For students who obtain IELTS 5.5 or equivalent, it is a two-year course that starts at the beginning of September each academic year;
- For students whose IELTS is below 5.5, it is a three-year course which usually starts in early September, with the flexibility of a January or March entry.
STUDY TRIPS AND FIELDWORK
Fieldwork is the core of our teaching of geoscientific concepts. It enables you to visualise the geological phenomena and see features in their natural settings; as well as providing you with opportunities to collect specimens, such as microfossils, for later processing, analysis, and interpretation.
Locations include classic U.K. fossil sites such as the Dorset ‘Jurassic’ coast in the south of England, and museums and centres of study, including the Dale Fort Centre in West Wales, which offers excellent opportunities of costal ecological and geological research. Study visits are also made to the University of Oxford’s Natural History Museum; the Natural History Museum in London; the Lapworth Museum at the University of Birmingham (combined with taster lectures suggested by the university); the Winchester Science Centre, and the Lake District.
ASSESSMENT OBJECTIVES
There are ten assessment criteria which form the basis of student assessment, both formal and informal, during the course. During the course our students:
- Develop the essential academic knowledge and language skills to progress confidently and smoothly onto higher level studies;
- Work with outstanding tutors and world-class lecturers;
- Learn from the geological past, to understand better how to consider future resource use;
- Benefit from exceptional fieldwork experience in the U.K. and overseas;
- Appreciate how Earth Sciences can inform governments to structure policies and make decisions regarding use of the Earth’s resources; and
- Develop the critical skills needed to succeed at university and in future careers.
REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDY
If you are over 16 years of age, you will be required to study for three years and have an English language qualification (at least IELTS 4 or equivalent). Students with higher English language proficiency (i.e. at least IELTs 5.5 or equivalent), and a solid academic foundation, can start from Year 2).
If you are under 16 years of age, a minimum of three-years is required to be undertaken. There is no formal English language qualification required, however, English proficiency will be assessed as part of the application and acceptance process.
