“…like that star of the waning summer who beyond all stars rises bathed in the ocean stream to glitter in brilliance.”
Homer, The Iliad.
Classical Greek provides a rigorous mental training that opens a window into the ancient Greek world, which has profoundly shaped contemporary society. You’ll engage with seminal works of literature and antiquities, gaining direct access to ancient ways of life and thought. You will hone your language skills to read unadapted prose and verse texts from authors like Homer, Plato, Herodotus, Thucydides, and Euripides. The course develops your understanding of the literary, historical, and cultural features of the Athenian world, and teaches you to appreciate and analyze literary techniques, styles, and genres.
Studying Classical Greek at an advanced level can lead to careers in academia as a professor or researcher specialising in ancient history, archaeology, or linguistics. It can also open doors in fields like museum curation, translation, or even roles in cultural heritage preservation and international diplomacy.
