How to apply to be a Greene’s tutor.
Working with Greene's
Greene’s aims to foster a productive, healthy, and safe working environment. We feel that our tutors are just as much a part of our community as our students, and, like our students, we want to make them feel comfortable, content, and confident both in the classroom and outside of it.
We encourage our tutors, many of whom are at different stages of their academic careers, whether they are finalising their Ph.D. dissertations or require work that is a little more flexible, to connect as a community, sharing knowledge, advice, and support with each other. When one of us succeeds, all of us benefit.
- Remuneration: we offer a competitive pay rate for Oxford, which increases in line with experience and qualification;
- Professional development: Greene’s provides monthly professional development sessions led by subject specialists. Upcoming sessions include:
- Tutoring students with ASD, ADHD and SEMH;
- How to mark like an examiner;
- How to help students with examination anxiety.
- Tutor forum: our online tutor forum allows tutors to seek guidance from their peers and share resources and tools;
- Administrative support: many time-consuming administrative tasks expected of agency tutors, such as timetabling and parental liaison, are handled centrally by Greene’s;
- Hybrid tuition: our tutors may use Greene’s facilities throughout the week and are encouraged to use the college as their working ‘hub’.
Our upcoming free tutor training sessions are as follows:
- November 2022: SEND training, Part 1 – focus on ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder);
- December 2022: Supporting students in their independent preparation;
- January 2023: January blues, being mindful of mindfulness.

Our GREENE’S community
At Greene’s, we actively encourage our tutors to get involved and stay up-to-date with the latest developments at Greene’s. If interested, tutors can sign up to receive monthly newsletters written by our Head of Tutors, which includes reminders of key academic and examination dates and also invitations to tutor training sessions, monthly afternoon teas, and plenty of other exciting social events.
The Application Process
Fill out the short online application form, which you can access by following the link at the bottom of the page. Successful completion of this form requires you to agree to Greene’s conditions of engagement for tutors. Please note: we are unable to accept applications not made through our online application form, however you do have the option to upload your C.V. as part of your application should you wish.
We will respond to your application shortly. If we are interested in taking your application further, you will be invited to attend an interview with the Senior Tutor or a member of his team. The interview may be in person or by video link at our discretion. If we are unable to take your application further at this stage, we will write to you to inform you.
Prior to your interview we will ask you to complete a detailed online pre-interview questionnaire which will include providing us with the names of two referees. Please note: your referees will be contacted as soon as the pre-interview questionnaire is submitted, as references are required before the interview takes place.
Either at your interview or immediately following your interview, we will inform you of whether you have been successful in becoming a tutor.
- Documentation compliance checks: we will ask you to provide us with a copy of your passport (and visa should it be applicable), your national insurance number and copies of your academic certificates and professional qualifications.
- Safeguarding checks: we will ask you to provide us with your enhanced DBS certificate, as well as certificates from any safeguarding or channel general awareness courses that you have undertaken. The college will also carry out its own additional safeguarding checks. If you do not already have an enhanced DBS or if you have not completed any safeguarding or channel general awareness courses, we can assist you in completing these. Please be aware that we require an enhanced DBS, issued no later than two years previously. If a new DBS is required, (whether or not the applicant has a current DBS) there is a statutory fee (which varies, but is currently £48.16) for an enhanced DBS application. To avoid further applications in the future, it is recommended you consider applying for the DBS Update Service, at the same time as the enhanced DBS application. For an additional annual fee (currently £13) the DBS Update Service allows the applicant to keep the DBS certificate up-to-date, and is thus available for checking by any other organisation for which you may work in the future, without your incurring further cost. The safeguarding and channel general awareness courses are provided online for free by the Oxfordshire Safeguarding Children Board and the Metropolitan Police respectively.
- Further administrative and professional training: at your interview the Senior Tutor, or a member of his team, will explain to you the particular additional training that will apply to you, taking into account your particular experience and requirements. The training is based on familiarising you with our systems, procedures, policies and practices. Additional training and support is available for successful tutors who may not be familiar with the U.K. examination system.
